Northern Ireland milk supplier, Ian Buchanan, farms outside Dungiven. Alongside his sons, Ian has grown their business dramatically over the past number of years. The backbone to Ian’s expansion and continued excellent herd performance over the last number of years has been a well managed calf rearing programme. The calves are fed on transition milk and then moved onto the Lakeland Agri SkimSmart Milk Replacer along with the Lakeland Agri Munchy Calf Muesli. The calves are introduced to the muesli straight away and receive adlib access to the muesli until just prior to weaning, which usually takes place at around 8 weeks of age. At this point, Ian estimates that the calves would have more than doubled their birthweights.
Commenting on calf performance, Ian stated,
As we aim to calve all our heifers at 24 months of age, the success of the calf rearing programme is crucial. The Munchy Calf Muesli is consistent and very palatable, and calves took to it straight away. They calves are very healthy, extremely content and there is a great shine off their coats. I would certainly, and already have recommended the Lakeland Agri Munchy Calf Muesli to other farmers.
