Fermented Wholecrop Wheat / Triticale

A good option on the less favourable , heavier soil types as these cereal crops are harvested much earlier than maize silage and are less sensitive to unfavourable soil conditions.

Wheat / triticale destined for fermented wholecrop should be grown using conventional husbandry techniques and harvested at approximately 35 % dry matter. Dry matter yields will range from 11 - 13 tonnes per hectare depending on soil type, husbandry and whether the crop is winter or autumn sown.

Triticale is a more attractive option to some farmers as it has a lower input requirement than the wheat. Good quality fermented whole crop wheat / triticale are ideal for inclusion as second forages in the diets of ruminant animals due to their high feeding value, high levels of structural fibre and their effect on dry matter intakes and production.
